Mexico Travel :: State of Colima

Some of the liveliest burial offerings of the Tomb Culture have been found in the state of Colima. The most famous are the 'little dogs' that perhaps represent the dogs who led the dead into the underworld. Figurines of warriors brandishing clubs that may depict shamans in ritual dances have also been found. In 1522, Cortes sent Cristobal de Olid into the west to find a large island rich with pearls and inhabited only by women: the mythic Amazonas. He found Colima instead, and the first Spanish settlement, the city of Colima, was established in 1523. Cortes founded Manzanillo, originally named Santiago de Bue-na Esperanza, as a shipbuilding port for his expeditions to Central America. Colima and Manzanillo were the only Spanish towns in the region for centuries, since settlers were attracted by richer mines and farmlands elsewhere. They were also deterred by the state's frequent earthquakes and the threat of the Colima volcano, which last erupted in 1913 (and sent out warning tremors in early 1991).
